1. "Fate Worse Than Death"
Chimeran Conversion Center
Grimsby, England
July 12th, 1951 0315 GMT
The Spire attack on the bus depot has apparently left you as the only survivor of yet another infestation of Crawlers. You awake as a prisoner in the Chimeran Conversion Center. You get to see, first hand, the process that begins a humans transformation into the Chimeran life form. You also get your first glimpse of the Menials. These cute little fellas are unarmed but vicious if you let one get close enough to you. A couple of shots from your Carbine will make short work of the two you see in front of you and you can move on into the room they were in. Shooting one grabs the attention of the other one, but these guys move like old men looking for their walker. If you let one of these guys get on top of you, blame yourself for not paying attention and shake him off. You'll experience these guys throughout the Conversion Center and they are crafty little beasts. They tend to hide
in little hidden corners only to jump on you silently from behind. Never walk into a new place with your back to a hidden corner. Keep your back against a wall whenever possible and you'll minimize your chances of a Menials cheap shot.
Another thing to look for in the Conversion Center are "Power Cells". They pretty much look like electric soccer balls. You can find them lying about on the floor, inserted in the front of the strange looking ATM-like machines and sometimes in racks in stacks of three. These are important because hitting one of these with a single round of ammunition from the Carbine or the Bullseye will cause it to short out and explode, taking anything near it down with it. Hitting one in a rack will cause a chain reaction with the others and send them flying, spreading the destructive power in an even wider area. These Power Cells will become very useful to you throughout the Conversion Center and I'll try to tell you when to look out for them. On the flip side, sometimes you will find a Menial with one in his hands, and if you get too close, he'll throw it at you . . .and that hurts.
Move into the next room and be prepared for a couple of more Menials, one in particular that will be to your left hiding behind a large crate. It's real easy to go blasting in to take care of the first Menial you see and wind up having this quiet little guy unwittingly behind you. Keep moving forward until you end up in a room where you can seemingly go no farther. Look around, gather up any health and ammo that you can find and get ready to move on. There is a door in this last room with a switch next to it, so walk up to it and press the triangle to push it and open the door. You'll switch to a cut scene where you'll see a couple of your allies get infested with Crawlers. A lone woman in another cell urges you to shoot a control panel to keep the same from happening to you. Meet Captain Rachel Parker of the British Intelligence Agency, your narrator for Resistance: Fall of Man.
When the cut scene is over, move on into the next room and take heed of the two Menials in here, one of which is hiding in a small side room. Grab whatever goodies you need as you progress and keep moving along, using a melee attack to break the boards covering one doorway as you go. Keep on alert for Menials, using both your eyes and ears as very often you will hear the Menials "growl" before you see them. They don't necessarily do it because they see you, they just do it. I suppose even Menials talk to themselves when they get bored.
Continue forward until you reach a long room that appears to be some kind of a dock area. There will be large crates in front of you and a lower area to your right down a couple of steps. Stay behind the crates for the moment and make sure there aren't any Menials in your vicinity. Peer through the crack between the crates and you should see Menials and possibly some Power Cells at the other end of this area. Shooting one or the other, or both will attract the attention of some Chimeran Hybrids and for the first time in the Conversion Center you'll be faced with enemies that shoot back. Use the crack between the crates to your advantage to clear out the nasties at the other end.
When all is clear, head over that way and investigate the first hallway to the left. You'll find some Frag grenades down here and Intelligence
Document #6 in the bathroom on the left. Head back out to the long room and continue to the end of the hall to the last hallway. In here you'll find a small kitchen area with some more ammo supplies. When you have everything you need, head to the opposite side of the hall from the kitchen, enter the elevator and flip the switch to ride upstairs.
When you reach the top, don't be alarmed by the massive number of Menials you see on the other side of the window. They don't see you, can't get to you and they are pretty much irrelevant at the moment. Look instead down the only open area you can walk through and look for the lone Chimera Hybrid patrolling back and forth on a high walkway. As long as you haven't gone too far, he is still pretty clueless, so site in on him, give him a tag and blast away. At this point, you are pretty safe to move forward, so do so until you come to the end of a broken walkway. You'll need to drop down to this lower area, but first, chuck a grenade over the edge to take care of the two Menials that you'll see right under your feet. When they are duly dispatched, drop down and proceed.
You'll come to a doorway that leads into an outdoor courtyard, but DON'T step through it yet!! Read the next couple of sentences first. This will be your introduction to the Chimeran hovering mines. As soon as you step into the doorway, you will hear a quick mechanical sound. When you hear it, drop back into the doorway and take cover to the side. These mines pop out of portals in the ground and hover at about head level, at which point the fire a very painful and very accurate beam at you. One shot from the Carbine or the Bullseye is enough to take care of it, but the mine fires quick and you have to learn to be quicker than it is or use cover until you can time a return shot. You'll learn to recognize the portals fairly quickly, however, there are a total of five mines in this courtyard (including this first one) and the portals are pretty well hidden in the grass. Take care of the first one, walk straight ahead very slowly and about halfway across, two more mines will pop up. Take them out quickly. Move further ahead, but stay to the left and behind the wall. Don't get jumpy and head for the stairs, that's just what they want you to do. Go all the way up to the opposite wall and stay behind it. Pop out around the corner quickly and then pop back, the last two mines will pop up at the base of the stairs. Use the corner as cover and time a couple of good shots to take out these mines.
When all is clear, stay down in the courtyard for a minute and go up on the little raised area to find some more ammo and your very first set of Hedgehog grenades! You'll also find the Rossmore 236 Shotgun down here under the stairs. There isn't much else down here, so climb the stairs and proceed along the walkway to the large crates at the other end. Use a melee attack to break one of the crates and allow you to continue on your path. Pass through this doorway and stop short to take a look. You are heading to a short set of stairs to your right, but take note of the two mine portals on the floor in front of the stairs. You probably didn't get a real good look at them down in the courtyard a few moments ago, but you get a real good view of them now. Line up your reticle to about head level, and approach the portals slowly. Be ready as soon as you hear the mechanical sound and blast both mines before they blast you. If you don't think you will beat them to the punch, don't forget that you can DUCK with L2!
When the two mines have been destroyed, continue up the short set of steps and you'll find yourself up on the walkway where you killed the first clueless Chimera you came across in this area. Follow the walkway until it ends above the caged area you couldn't access from below. Before you drop down next to the forklift, note the two mine portals on the floor. There is nothing you can do about them from up here, so you best have yourself ready when you hit the floor because they'll have a bead on you before you get your bearings straight once you're down there. Use the forklift for cover if you've got time, but it's quicker just to hit the trigger of your Carbine and spray in their general direction. Most often, you'll get them before they get much of a chance to do anything to you.
Proceed onward and you'll enter a large open area. There are a few Menials wandering the area, so keep an eye out without traveling too far forward and you should have plenty of time to get them before they get you. There is some ammo and health on the back left side of this area, but in order to proceed, you'll have to go around two large crates near a couple of those funky looking ATM things to proceed. Note that there are two Chimera Hybrids on a raised platform to your left as you enter that particular area and they are not shy about using their Bullseyes. For a fun show, chuck one of your newly acquired Hedgehog grenades up there. Keep an eye out as you proceed in case the grenade manages to miss one of them.
The chapter is almost over, and what chapter would be complete without a whopper of a fight at the end. This one isn't all that bad, but it's still a hassle. As you approach the doorway to continue on, once again note the mine portals on the ground. Do what you have to do to get rid of them and cautiously proceed forward. If you've fired any rounds into the farther warehouse room in the process, you have probably attracted the attention of several Menials on the ground level of that room and they are most likely doing their arthritic walk in your direction. Be mindful of the Chimeran Hybrids that are also in that warehouse, as they will be shooting at you as well. Stay back from the warehouse area without entering the door, and just let the Menials come to you. Stack their decrepit bodies in the doorway. When you have them out of the way, you can use the door as cover and "pop and shoot" the 4 Chimeran Hybrids inside the warehouse. Two are on the upper level on the opposite side of the warehouse, one will straight at you through the doorway and the other will wait until you have killed everyone else and then ambush you from the left after you walk through the door.
When all the Hybrids are permanently sleeping, search the ground floor of the warehouse and pick up all the health and ammo you need. There is plenty down here, so you should have no problem stocking back up. When you've gathered up everything you want, head up the stairs to the upper area where the furthest two Hybrids were shooting from and head down to the far end of this area. At the end, you'll find a sealed doorway with a tear-drop shaped panel on a pedestal next to it. This is a Chimeran switch, so press the damn thing and open the door. Step through and carefully follow the curving path, being wary that the Chimera have littered this walkway with mine portals. Make your way carefully around, eliminating the mines as you go until you reach a drop off blocked by large crates. Melee one of the crates to pass through, drop down to the lower area, grabbing the health if you need it, then drop down again to ground level. Your vision blurs and the chapter ends.

Chimeran Conversion Center

Uncharacteristically, you begin this chapter precisely where you left the last one, so we just pick up from there. Continue to follow the path until you reach the bottom of a large stairway. Make sure you have a full clip on hand in your Carbine and slowly approach the bottom of the stairs. You'll soon be treated to a Leaper ambush, complete with "nails on a chalkboard" screaming as they rush down the stairs. Step backward away from the stairs as they rain down and spray the crowd as they approach. All goes well, and you should have cleared the ambush before any of them gets a chance to leave a scratch on you.
Proceed up the stairs with your clip once again loaded. When you get to the top, quickly dash into the alcove on the left (there is more Carbine ammo in there) and turn quickly around to face the alcove that was on the right. Another Leaper ambush will come over that wall, only this time with less space between you and them. Try to get them as they get to the bottom of the wall to keep them as far away as possible. When all is quiet again, find the door with the switch in this area and flip it to move on.
You enter a room full of Chimera Cocoon's hanging from the ceiling. Don't waste any ammo in here because you can't do anything to them and they aren't going to do anything to you. Just proceed over to the opposite side of the room to the left, and approach the top of the stairs with caution. The area below is filled with Chimeran Hybrids and Menials. Stay at the top of the stairs and clear out as much as possible down below by throwing down a couple of grenades, and quickly looking for Power Cells you can shoot to clear out many of the problems you have down there. There is one Hybrid on a raised platform in the distance, but he seems to leave you alone unless you actually try to come down the stairs, so pick him off from up here and you don't have to worry about him later. When you think you have everyone in there cleared out, you don't, but you're not going to get the rest until you cave in and go down there, so go on down. When you reach the bottom, look to the left between the machinery and pick off any Hybrids that remain and be ready for a group of Menials that seem to pop up out of nowhere.
When all is quiet, check around the room for ammo and health, being ever watchful for sneaky little Menials that may have planted themselves in some obscure corner. When you have all that you need (or can get), move toward the next area, in front of that platform that the distant Hybrid was on, and keep an eye to your right as you approach the large machine. There will be a Hybrid over there, patrolling back and forth, and as soon as you see him, he will see you, so there is no time to think about how you want to kill him. Just blast him down. When he is dead, you'll be able to hear that there are more Hybrids in your future, but if you do this right, you'll never have to face them. From the spot below the platform the earlier Hybrid was standing on, turn to your right and creep sideways looking toward the area that the last Hybrid you killed came from. Before you are in the exposed area where several Hybrids will be able to see you, look for a small gap between the large machine and the little ATM looking thing and you should see a Power Core on the floor on the other side. Shoot this Power Core through the gap, and this will set off a chain reaction with several other Power Cores that were out of view, killing every Hybrid over there. POOF!! 4 or 5 Hybrid down for the count and you never had to look them in the face.
When the coast is clear, pick up all the ammo and health you can get your hands on. Take the ramps up onto the machinery and you can access the platform the earlier Hybrid was standing on. When you have all you can, proceed to the door in the back right corner of the room you wiped out with the Power Cores and flip the Chimeran Switch to open it. Cautiously walk through the short tunnel, because there is a Hybrid waiting just outside of it to your right. Try to pick him off from inside the tunnel because if not, he's going to be right on top of you when you drop down onto the platform, and you have other issues to deal with when you get down there.
As soon as you have dropped onto the platform, use the machinery to your right for cover and pick off the Hybrids across from you. Use whatever means you have to get rid of them quickly. They have Hedgehog grenades and they aren't in the least bit afraid to use them. Be careful not to dart out and drop off the edge of the platform as this makes your death instantaneous. When the Hybrids are gone, approach the area where they were and head to the right to follow the path around the outside of this section. Be alert for the Menials that will be waiting for you as you round this corner. You will run into a few more Hybrids as you continue to follow this path and in a couple of places you will have to cross narrow sections, so be careful not to fall of the edges. Also keep your eyes open for mine portals. They will be plainly visible, so you should have plenty of time to prepare yourself for their disposal.
After the second set of Hybrids and a couple of mine portals, you will approach the end of the pathway and a round platform with a switch on it. (Don't get all excited and run onto the platform, there are mine portals next to the platform waiting for you to do just that!) Once you're on the platform, push the Chimeran switch and up you go! Here we go with that "fading vision" crap again.
3. "Hunted Down"
Chimeran Conversion Center
Grimsby, England
July 12th, 1951 0738 GMT
When you are done enjoying the show, proceed along the walkway and find the exit at the opposite end. It would appear you've almost made it out save for the small dockside town you have to make it through at the bottom of the elevator you are now going to get into and ride down. Captain Parker lets you know that your escape is not going to be made easy. When you reach the bottom, you'll be at the beginning of the path into the little dockside town. Proceed forward and look into the doorway of the bar on your right. There is a mine portal right inside the door, so be careful of it and get rid of it. Enter the bar and take out another mine hidden on the other side of the pool table in front of you. When both mines are gone, explore the bar for ammo needs.
When you are done, you can exit the bar through the other door, but be very careful. There are three mine portals in the walkway right in front of you. Use the doorway or crates for cover and take care of them. You can now either walk straight out of the first bar and enter the next establishment through the door to your right, or turn right out of the first bar and look for the door into the same establishment on this side of the building. If you choose to go straight out, there is a mine portal just inside the doorway of the other establishment, so be ready for it. If you chose to take the other doorway, you will have that mine ahead and to your left and another one to your right and you run the risk of activating both of them at once. Best to do them one at a time. When you've taken care of the first mine in that building, go back out and continue along the docks. You will see some goodies ahead of you, get them if you need to and turn to the right around the building. You'll now be approaching even more mine portals right in front of you. Take care of those and turn left out onto the pier, and shut down yet another mine portal near some more goodies. You may need to run out here later and grab this stuff.
Now go back to the second establishment and go to the back door, just inside of which you will find the second mine portal in this place, but the last portal you'll have to deal with on the docks. Once this final portal has been taken care of, look on the counter to your right for Intelligence Document #7. Go back out onto the docks, but before exploring any further, look down the docks toward the only area you haven't been yet. You should see a stack of Power Cores on your left and the dock will disappear around the corner to your right. Take this as a sign. There are two Hybrids hiding around the corner, and you stand a pretty good chance of not having to deal with them if you just shoot the stack of Power Cores.
When those two are dealt with, proceed onward and you'll have no choice but to enter a large room with some machinery in it. Enter this room carefully and keep your eye on the far wall to the left. Up on a platform, you'll see a Hybrid patrolling that doesn't know you are here yet, but as soon as you take a shot at him, all hell's gonna break loose. Try to peg him with a tag and then lay into him to take him out, and as soon as you do, run back out of the room the way you came in. A couple of more Hybrids are going to appear around the machinery and come after you, so it's best to use the cover of the corner of the building outside to take them out methodically. When they are gone and you go back into the building, there will be at least one more on the floor with you and at least one more on the platform at the back of the room. Use the machinery for cover and take out any that remain in here. When you are done, pick up any ammo you need from the dead Hybrids and head back out onto the docks to grab anything out there that you left behind that you might need.
When you are all set, head back into the building and go up onto the platform at the back. Prepare to be rushed by two Hybrids coming at you from the right end of the platform. Take them down quickly because they will be closer than you like them to be. When they are down, go to the other end of the platform and peer around the corner to the right before you reach the very end. You'll see another Hybrid on the floor below you to your left and one up above you on another platform a bit to the right. Use the corner or the crates for cover and take out these two. When they are both gone, another will appear in the same area the first one on the floor was. Take care of him the same way, and when all is quiet, drop down into the room. Do a quick check to make sure there are now straggling Hybrids and when you know all is clear, head up the stairs in here to the highest platform in the room. There will be some dead allied soldiers up here, as well as Intelligence Document #8. Head back down and exit the building through the door near the bottom of the stairs.
This next area is Hybrid-free. Head down then back up again to the small platform across from the forklift. Run and jump across onto the roof of the forklift and claim the grenades and ammo on the other platform. When you've got this stuff, make sure you have a full clip in the Carbine and head up the large set of stairs at the end of this area to proceed. I bet you are starting to get what it means when I tell you to have a full clip in the Carbine. At the top of the stairs, there is a doorway on your left and the smallest of alcoves on your right. Approach the doorway just enough to initiate the screams of the Leapers, than back up against the wall in the alcove. Use the doorway as a funnel and blast the Leapers before they have a chance to get to you. When they are done, enter the doorway and walk straight ahead to the top of a set of stairs. You'll once again hear the screams of another Leaper ambush, so run back out the door and once again use it as a funnel to finish off this second wave. When they are gone, you
are done with the Leapers for the time being.
Enter the building again and take the stairs down to the bottom level. Pick up whatever items are down here that you need. Climb in the elevator down here and flip the switch to head up to the warehouse. When you reach the warehouse you'll find that it is very large, very roomy and suspiciously quiet. Captain Parker lets you know that things aren't going to stay quiet for very long. You're almost out of here, in fact you can see your ride in the distance if you look out the only door out of the warehouse. It is hovering overhead waiting for you to make it to the other end of this outer area. You will have to get past no less than 16 Hybrids and a turret to get out of here. Pay attention to what I'm about to tell you and you'll make it out the first time. . . .
As you approach the door out of the warehouse, but before you leave it, look to the container straight ahead for a Hybrid on patrol to the right of it. You can take him down from inside the warehouse. Once you've opened this can of worms, more Hybrids will appear to the right and sometimes one from the left side of the container. Try to stay inside the doorway and take out as many as you can. If you take too long, sometimes one will rush the door and make it into the warehouse. Once you have cleared all that you can, it's time to leave the relative safety of the warehouse and venture out into the open. At no time do I recommend you let your guard down out here, just be warned. I don't want any nasty e mails proclaiming that I "forgot to mention *THIS* guy and he wasted me" . . .these Hybrids are only semi-predictable.
First head to the left side of the container and peer around the side. You should see one or two Hybrids in the distance. Use the container and do away with them. When all is clear that way, go back towards the warehouse and now over to the right side of this area. Two Hybrids will pop out of a gap in the wall on this side and they'll be pretty close, so you'll want to take care of them as quickly as possible. In the gap that these guys came out of, there is some health, grenades and ammo for your fighting convenience. When you have this stuff, there are a couple of containers right outside this gap and on the other side of them, there are four Hybrids dug in with some low cover. A blast or two with the grenade launcher on your Carbine can clear this crowd quick, or one well placed Hedgehog will put a stop to their antics as well.
If you need some health, head back to the warehouse and cross back over to the other side of this area. Without venturing too far out from under the overhead walkway, look back over to the other side and see if you can make out the two Hybrids standing on top of a flatbed. Take them out from here if you can. Now, by heading back by the warehouse, go back to where you were when you eliminated the group of four Hybrids. The reason you keep going back by the warehouse is to avoid the waiting turret. Doing it this way, the turret will never fire a shot.
If you didn't get the two Hybrids on the flatbed from the other side, take care of them now. Continue along this wall and look for a flatbed that you can jump up onto using a nearby crate. As soon as you do, a couple more Hybrids will appear to your left at ground level. Take them out very quickly because you have no cover on this flatbed. Once you have achieved relative safety, go up the ramp onto the top of the nearby container. Creep carefully up until you see the tips of a Hybrids cooling unit appear over the edge. If you've got one left, toss a grenade over the edge of the container, and you'll find that you not only took out the Hybrid you were peeking at, but the numskull that was manning the turret. See, I told you he would never get to fire that thing.
You're not out of the woods yet, but you can see free air, so lets get out of here. Hop off the right side of the container into the area behind the turret and watch to the right side of the container opposite of the one you just dropped off of. Three more Hybrids will come around and there isn't a whole hell of a lot to hide behind at this point. I might mention here that at this point, if you die, you start back over inside the warehouse . . . so stay alive. You could run back to the left and seek cover on the other side of the turret, but I wasn't about to let one of these guys get control of that thing and mow me down. Cram yourself into the corner by the container that you jumped off of and one of the Hybrids will go over behind the turret
where you can't see him, which just leaves you with whoever is right in front of you to deal with, then when they are gone, you can take care of him however you see fit. If you were lucky enough to still have a round left in your grenade launcher, this is a fantastic time to use it. Once these guys are dead, the danger is gone and you are free to leave the area.
Head around the container that the final Hybrids came from and go up the set of stairs that you'll find in this area. Follow the pathway and you'll have to carefully walk across some thin boards while Captain Parker does some mild bitching about you being too slow, like the game can progress without you or something. They will wait until you get there and she knows it. After you've crossed the boards, exit the only way you can and when you hit the open street, you are done with this little nightmare.
Continue to Manchester . . . |
